Alison’s Last Donut

Project type: Just for fun!

My role: Design, development, donut enthusiast

Technologies: HTML, CSS, PHP, Twitter API integration, Javascript

A website to provide you with up-to-the-minute updates on my daily donut consumption (also known as a fun little side project and an ode to my love for circular baked treats).

This site started out as simply a timer, but updating the timer required a computer and FTP access. I rarely have computer access while I’m eating a donut, so this was a serious detriment to the accuracy of my website.  Enter Twitter, a way to instantaneously alert the world to my donut consumption habits, and with a great API to boot. Now, my Twitter account just needs to tweet with the hashtag #donutsforever to update my donut website. It’s like magic!

The details: I set up a twitter app to call my tweet feed, check for a specific hashtag (#donutsforever), grab the date of the most recent #donutsforever tweet, adjust the time zone of this tweet to match the US West Coast, and place this most recent date in the counter script. The counter script then counts upward (forever!) from my last donut tweet. Until I start it all over with another donut + tweet, that is.
